Google Tests AI in Search Answers in the UK

Google, the world's most popular search engine giant, has begun testing search answers generated by artificial intelligence (AI) in the UK. This feature was previously tested in the United States last year and is now making its way to British soil. Initially, only a small percentage of logged-in users from the UK will be able to see the "overview" generated by AI at the top of some search results.

Publisher Concerns and Issues

Despite Google's market dominance, its rival, Microsoft's Bing, is already integrating its AI, called Copilot. However, some publishers fear that AI responses may reduce visits to their websites. They worry that more elaborate chatbot-style answers will satisfy users' curiosity without requiring them to visit the pages. Additionally, AI responses may contain fewer links and ads, affecting their ad revenue.

AI Development in Search

The "Search Generative Experience," as Google calls it, has been available for almost a year in the USA, but only for users registered through Google Labs. In the UK, the experiment will involve a "small slice" of search traffic selected from logged-in users. Google emphasizes that the goal of the new search results is to continue displaying links and ads to encourage users to visit various sources of information. However, the company is aware of the challenges related to improving information quality and avoiding errors resulting from the use of AI in the search process.

Deadly heatwave in West Africa – climate change as the main cause

The recent heatwave that swept through West Africa and the Sahel region is recognized as a direct effect of human-induced climate change. Scientists from the World Weather Attribution group confirm that the extremely high temperatures observed would not have been possible without the long-term impact of greenhouse gas emissions from coal, oil, and gas usage. Last month, temperatures in Mali exceeded 48°C, leading to tragic consequences—hundreds of deaths directly linked to this extreme weather phenomenon by local hospitals.
