Plastics used in furniture, electronics, and home insulation contain toxic substances that scientists have found can easily penetrate human skin.

A new study conducted by scientists at the University of Birmingham shows that chemicals used to fireproof products can penetrate human skin and enter the bloodstream.

These substances, used in various everyday items including laptops, baby seats, and smartphones, can disrupt thyroid function, cognitive development, motor skills, ovarian function, and increase the risk of cancer.

Researchers already knew these substances could enter the body through food and water, but this is the first time it has been shown they can penetrate the skin.

Scientists studying microplastics containing PBDE simulated the skin absorption process using a 3D skin model printed from human skin cells. The results showed that the skin could absorb up to 8 percent of these chemical substances from microplastics, with higher absorption when the skin was more sweaty.

This study provides important evidence for regulators and policymakers regarding microplastics and aims to protect public health from harmful exposure to these chemical substances.
